Unlocking secrets of Bandhas, Ujjayi Breath, and Kinetic Chains

Bandha and Yogic breathing workshop in Stavanger

Yoga is more than just movement—it’s an intricate system of energy control that connects breath, muscle engagement, and awareness. At the heart of this system are Bandhas (energy locks) and Ujjayi breath, working in harmony to create stability, refine movement, and awaken deeper states of presence.

Understanding Kinetic Chains and Bandhas

Our bodies function through kinetic chains, where muscles work in synergy to create efficient movement and stability. Bandhas act as key regulators in these chains, directing energy and ensuring proper force transfer throughout the body.

  • Mula Bandha (Root Lock): Engages the pelvic diaphragm, transversus abdominis (TVA), multifidus, and deep hip stabilizers to provide foundational support for the spine and pelvis.
  • Uddiyana Bandha (Abdominal Lock): Engages the diaphragm, obliques, and intercostal muscles, creating an upward lift that supports spinal elongation and internal organ compression.
  • Jalandhara Bandha (Throat Lock): Engages the sternocleidomastoid, hyoid, and scalene muscles, influencing breath retention and nervous system regulation.

When paired with Ujjayi breath, these Bandhas enhance stability, improve postural integrity, and refine energy flow, optimizing movement efficiency and body awareness.

The Bandhas: The Energy Locks of Yoga

1. Mula Bandha – The Root Lock

Located in the pelvic floor, Mula Bandha is activated by gently contracting the anal sphincter and pelvic diaphragm. This engagement lifts energy upward and prevents it from dissipating.

Benefits:

  • Creates a stable foundation for movement and posture.
  • Supports the lower spine and core.
  • Enhances focus and grounding.

2. Uddiyana Bandha – The Abdominal Lock

This Bandha is engaged in the lower abdomen, just above the navel. It involves an upward suction effect by lifting the diaphragm while holding the breath out.

Benefits:

  • Massages internal organs and stimulates digestion.
  • Enhances spinal elongation and breath control.
  • Promotes energy flow and mental clarity.

3. Jalandhara Bandha – The Throat Lock

Activated by tucking the chin slightly toward the chest, Jalandhara Bandha regulates breath and energy circulation through the throat.

Benefits:

  • Stimulates the vagus nerve, balancing the nervous system.
  • Enhances breath retention and deepens meditation.
  • Supports energetic alignment in pranayama practices.

Ujjayi Breathing: The Oceanic Flow of Energy

Often called the “victorious breath”, Ujjayi involves a slight constriction at the throat, producing a soft, oceanic sound as air flows in and out through the nose.

How to Practice Ujjayi:

  1. Inhale through the nose, gently constricting the back of the throat as if whispering “haaa” with closed lips.
  2. Exhale with the same controlled constriction, producing a steady sound.
  3. Maintain smooth, even breath cycles, creating rhythmic movement.

Why Ujjayi Works:

  • Regulates the Nervous System – Induces a state of calm and focus.
  • Enhances Breath Awareness – Connects breath to movement and stillness.
  • Optimizes Oxygen Exchange – Increases endurance and energy efficiency.

Integrating Bandhas and Breath in Practice

By combining Bandhas with Ujjayi breath, we create a powerful synergy that:

  • Improves balance and coordination in asana practice.
  • Enhances breath control and endurance.
  • Supports deep meditation and energy awareness.

Applying These Principles Beyond the Mat

Bandhas and Ujjayi breathing are not just for yoga—they can be applied in daily life:

  • Engaging Mula Bandha while walking enhances posture.
  • Using Ujjayi breath in stressful moments promotes calmness.
  • Activating Uddiyana Bandha improves core control during movement.

Final Thoughts: A Journey of Awareness

Bandhas and Ujjayi breath are gateways to unlocking deeper awareness, stability, and energetic mastery. Whether you’re a beginner or refining your practice, approach them with curiosity and patience. As you engage these techniques with intention, you may discover new dimensions of strength, control, and inner stillness.

NLP for Yoga Teachers

12 week NLP course for Yoga Professionals starting September 7th

Yoga is a journey of self-awareness, transformation, and connection. As yoga teachers, we guide students through breath, movement, and mindfulness to help them cultivate balance in body and mind. But what if we could enhance this process by understanding the language of the mind itself? This is where Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) becomes a powerful tool.

What if your words could guide a deeper change in your students and yourself?

What if your words were powerful enough to light that spark in your students… and deepen your own presence as a teacher?

Join our 12‑week NLP journey designed just for yoga teachers. You’ll discover how subtle shifts in language, pacing, and sensory attention can help you hold space with clarity, calm, and real connection.

NLP helps us understand how the human mind interprets and processes information, collecting input through the sensory system and running it through our internal maps of the world. This process involves filtering, adding missing information, and making meaning by filling in blanks. Understanding this allows us to alter our language, perceptions, and behavior to make communication more effective.

We process information primarily through three key sensory channels:

  • Visual Processing: How we interpret the world through sight, images, and spatial awareness.
  • Auditory Processing: How we process sounds, language, and verbal communication.
  • Kinesthetic Processing: How we perceive and understand through touch, movement, and sensation.

Beyond these sensory modalities, NLP also considers meta models and meta programs, which act as unconscious filters shaping how we interpret experiences. These filters, unique to each individual, influence thought patterns, decision-making, and emotional responses. By understanding these differences, we can refine communication, enhance learning, and help shift perspectives more effectively.

Imagine how two people can experience the same situation but interpret it completely differently. Why does one person see a challenge as an opportunity while another feels stuck? NLP provides insight into these differences and offers strategies to shift perspectives toward growth and empowerment.

Why NLP Matters for Yoga Teachers

Teaching yoga goes beyond guiding asanas and sequences; it’s about creating an experience that supports personal growth and self-discovery. NLP offers a variety of tools that can deepen this process, including:

1. The Power of Language

Different words trigger different thought processes. In a meditation class, for example, a teacher might use language that requires deeper processing—words that evoke reflection, memory, or imagery. If new instructions are given before a student has completed processing the previous ones, it can create cognitive overload rather than relaxation. By understanding how language influences thought patterns, yoga teachers can allow space for words to settle, ensuring their cues guide rather than overwhelm.

Words shape perception. How we phrase cues, offer encouragement, and structure instructions can significantly impact a student’s experience. NLP helps refine communication, ensuring that our language supports positive reinforcement, clarity, and empowerment.

2. Understanding Learning Styles

Every student processes information differently. NLP identifies three primary learning modalities:

  • Visual Learners respond best to imagery and demonstrations.
  • Auditory Learners thrive with clear verbal instructions.
  • Kinesthetic Learners connect deeply through physical experience and sensation.

By incorporating all three styles into our teaching, we create a more inclusive and effective learning environment.

3. Building Rapport and Connection

Connection is the foundation of effective teaching. NLP techniques like mirroring body language, pacing breath patterns, and active listening can help establish trust and enhance the teacher-student relationship.

4. Shifting Limiting Beliefs

Many students (and teachers) carry unconscious beliefs that limit their progress—“I’m not flexible enough,” “I’ll never master this pose,” or “I’m not good at meditation.” NLP provides tools to recognize and reframe these limiting thoughts, fostering a growth mindset on and off the mat.

5. Anchoring Positive States

NLP teaches how to create “anchors”—associations that trigger specific emotional states. In a yoga class, this could mean using a particular breath technique, mantra, or mudra to help students access a sense of calm, confidence, or focus whenever needed.

Integrating NLP into Yoga Teaching

A yoga teacher possessing NLP skills can significantly enhance their ability to guide students by adapting communication to their primary learning modalities, building rapport, and fostering confidence both in themselves and their students. Here’s how:

  • Adapting Communication to Learning Modalities: By recognizing whether a student is primarily a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner, a teacher can tailor their instructions to be more effective. For instance, using vivid imagery for visual learners, clear verbal cues for auditory learners, and hands-on guidance or experiential learning for kinesthetic learners ensures better understanding and engagement.
  • Building Rapport with Students: NLP techniques such as mirroring body language, matching breathing rhythms, and active listening can help establish trust and connection. When students feel seen and understood, they are more open to learning and personal growth.
  • Enhancing Student Confidence: Many students struggle with self-doubt or limiting beliefs about their abilities. By applying NLP strategies like reframing negative thoughts and using positive reinforcement, a teacher can help students shift from “I can’t do this” to “I am progressing at my own pace.”
  • Developing Confidence as a Teacher: NLP also empowers teachers to communicate with more clarity, handle class dynamics effectively, and respond to different personalities with ease. This leads to a more impactful and fulfilling teaching experience.

Bringing NLP into your yoga classes doesn’t mean changing everything—it’s about subtle yet powerful shifts in how you communicate, observe, and guide transformation. Here are a few ways to begin:

  • Use Empowering Language: Instead of “Don’t fall,” say “Stay strong and steady.”
  • Observe and Adapt: Notice whether students respond better to verbal cues, demonstrations, or hands-on adjustments.
  • Encourage Positive Mindset Shifts: Guide students to replace self-doubt with curiosity and self-compassion.
  • Create Emotional Anchors: Introduce a grounding breath or mantra that students can take beyond the mat into daily life.

The Path Forward

Bringing NLP into your yoga teaching is about more than just refining your words—it’s about creating an environment where transformation can happen naturally. As you integrate these techniques, you’ll notice a deeper connection with your students, an increased ability to inspire, and a greater sense of confidence in your teaching.

Start by observing how your students respond to different communication styles. Experiment with adapting your language, pacing your instructions, and holding space for deeper processing. Small shifts in your approach can lead to profound changes in how your students experience your classes and their own inner growth.

Yoga is the art of union—body, breath, and mind. NLP deepens this union by helping us understand the patterns that shape our thoughts and behaviors. As a yoga teacher, incorporating NLP can amplify your impact, making your classes not just physically transformative, but mentally and emotionally empowering as well.

Are you ready to explore the synergy between NLP and yoga? Stay tuned for upcoming courses, insights, tools, and practical applications to elevate your teaching and empower your students on a whole new level.
